How to Make Your Balayage Last: Maintenance Tips from a Pro

Brunette balayage with blonde highlights and soft waves — balayage maintenance tips Fort Worth

One of the best things about balayage is that it's lower maintenance than traditional highlights — but that doesn't mean it's no maintenance. After 22 years of creating beautiful balayage for my Fort Worth clients, here are my top tips for keeping your color looking salon-fresh between visits.

Wait Before Your First Wash

After your balayage appointment, wait at least 48-72 hours before washing your hair. This gives the color time to fully set and oxidize. I know it can be tempting, but this simple step makes a huge difference in how long your color lasts.

Use Color-Safe Products

This is non-negotiable. Sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner are essential for maintaining your balayage. Sulfates strip color and natural oils, causing your highlights to fade faster and your hair to become dry. I recommend Kevin Murphy or Moroccan Oil products — both available at my salon.

Wash Less Frequently

Try to wash your hair 2-3 times per week instead of daily. Over-washing strips your color and dries out your hair. On non-wash days, dry shampoo is your best friend. It absorbs oil, adds volume, and extends the life of your color.

Protect from Heat and Sun

Always use a heat protectant before styling with hot tools. UV rays can also fade your color, so consider a UV-protecting spray during summer months. If you're spending time at the pool, wet your hair with clean water first and apply a leave-in conditioner — this prevents chlorine from being absorbed.

Schedule Regular Touch-Ups

The beauty of balayage is that it grows out gracefully, but you'll still want touch-ups every 12-16 weeks to keep the look fresh. During these appointments, I can also add a gloss or toner to refresh your tone and add shine.

Have questions about caring for your specific balayage? Don't hesitate to reach out or bring it up at your next appointment. I'm always happy to recommend products and routines tailored to your hair.
